AKU DAN SAWAH PADI ....

Masa kecil dahulu aku membesar dalam dua situasi. Hidup dikelilingi oleh pohon-pohon getah dan kelapa sawit yang dipanggil ESTET dan di sawah padi kepunyaan Datuk di kampung. Kedua-duanya dulu yang kuanggap sekadar dunia permainan teng-teng, galah panjang dan sembunyi2 itu rupa-rupanya barulah kusedar ianya adalah sumber penting bumi yang kupijak ini, MALAYSIA!!!

Di estet aku biasa bergaul dengan kawan-kawan yang kebanyakkannya Melayu, Cina dan India. Kami berkawan baik malah semua ahli keluarga umpama gabungan sebuah keluarga yang besar. Sehingga sekarang aku tidak kekok bergaul dengan apa bangsa jua. Paling best bila perayaan, sama-sama dapat merasa kuih masing-masing. Pagi-pagi lagi ibubapa kami sudah sibuk bersiap ke ladang getah dan kelapa sawit untuk bekerja. Ada juga kawan-kawan yang mengikut ibubapa mereka sementara menunggu waktu sekolah di sesi petang. Hujung minggu atau waktu cuti sekolah pula aku pasti ke kampung Datuk yang hanya beberapa kilometer dari estet tu.

Di kampung, Datuk mengusahakan sawah padi dan ladang getah. Tapi aku lebih tertarik dengan aktiviti di sawah. Ibu juga turut serta baik waktu menanam padi ataupun menuai. Masa tu cara manual digunakan ... itu yang disebut 'membanting tulang!'.. aku????... nun di taliair ditepi sawah dengan beberapa orang sepupu.. apa yang kami buat?... apa lagi, tangkap ikan le..kadang-kadang memancing.. nak best lagi, pergi ke parit-parit @ longkang kecil disepanjang sawah tu, cari buih-buih kecil yang timbul dicelah pokok-pokok dan .....sauk!!!.. haa..dapat ikan laga!! BETTA FISH orang sekarang ni panggil.Berbalang-balang kami kumpul .. ada masa kami lawan laga ikan tu!!

Datuk proses semuanya secara manual proses padi  hingga menjadi beras. Mesin kayu yang digunakan untuk menumbuk beras di dalam lesung batang kayu, itu yang masih ku ingat. Tapi sayang, mungkin tiada siapa yang terfikir bahawa peralatan-peralatan tradisional itu akan menjadi barang berharga sekarang. Jadi entah kemanalah perginya alat tu... Datuk simpan padi yang telah diproses dan dipanggil beras di dalam kepuk padi di belakang rumah. Ia seperti sebuah pondok kecil dan dalam erti kata moden 'stor padi'. Beras diambil mengikut First In First Out (FIFO) yakni beras yang lama digunakan dahulu dan yang baharu disimpan untuk kemudian hari. Bagaimanapun ada jenis beras tertentu, kata orang Kedah "Beras Baru" .. beras ni wangi dan lebih sedap. Masa proses padi menjadi beras ni umpama satu pesta dan kenduri.. riuh rendah emak dan saudara-saudaranya bergotong royong. Jadi kami yang budak-budak ni memang kenyang lah .. pergi main kat sawah dan tali air, lapar lari balik isi perut dan lepas tu sambung bermain lagi.

Ada satu lagi yang aku "miss" sangat-sangat ... batang padi yang hijau lagi tu boleh dibuat serunai ..  kuat dan sedap bunyi nya...Tak tahulah aku reti buat lagi ke tidak ... pokok padipun dah lama tak tengok... rindu pula nak balik kampung!!! tapi .. sekadar tengok sawah padi orang sajalah sebab sawah padi Datuk sudah lama tidak diusahakan dan kini telah terbentang 'highway' di atasnya ...

Suatu hari sambil lepak-lepak bersarapan depan TV terpandanglah temubual tentang produk ni. Jadi terdetik dihati ingin mencuba. Saya order 2 botol (30ml) dan 1 bedak sejuk. Prof. Datuk Dr. Mazlan Bt. Othman is the First Malaysian Astrophysicist who graduated from the University of Otago with a PhD in physics and is the first woman from a developing country to be appointed as director of the Vienna-based United Nations Office for outerspace Affairs in 1999. She is currently the director-general of Malaysia's National Space Agency.

Former TV3 presenter Ras Adiba Radzi (born July 27, 1968), who is paralysed from the waist down, embarked on a 14-day, 420-km trip in her wheelchair from Johor to Kuala Lumpur on August 6, 2003. She wheeled through Malacca and Negeri Sembilan before arriving at Dataran Putra, Putrajaya on August 20.

Datuk Maria Menado , the queen of Malay movies in the 50s and 60s, set up Maria Menado Productions in 1961 and produced 'Korban Fitnah', 'Darahku', 'Sumpah Pontianak' and 'Pontianak Kembali,' among others. She was well-known for her �pontianak' (vampire) roles and last appeared in 'Darahku' (My Blood) in 1962.

NAVY'S FIRST WOMAN COMMANDING OFFICER

Lt. Noraini Sheikh Ahmad was promoted to commanding officer of the Royal Malaysian Navy's communications centre in Lumut, Perak at the age of 42 on November 12, 1996, after 23 years of service. She was born in Singapore and grew up in Kuala Terengganu before joining the navy as a recruit with its volunteer unit on Jan 12, 1973. She holds the significant role of directing the communicating centre if the RMN in Lumut. The station receives and sends radio messages to naval and merchant ships within a 2,000 nautical mile range. The station which sits on a 17ha site with 70 personnel was built on April 1, 1983.

FIRST WOMAN TO PARAGLIDE FROM MOUNT KINABALU

Nor Azieta Kamaruddin became the �First Woman To Paraglide From Mount Kinabalu' on December 18, 2004. The 27-year old woman spent about 30 minutes in the air before landing at a golf course in Kundasang.

FIRST WOMAN STATE SECRETARY

Datin Paduka Norsiah Haron aged 55, was appointed 'First Woman State Secretary' by the Johor state government on January 10, 2006. The Batu Pahat born Norsiah began as an administrative officer in 1973 after graduating from Universiti Sains Malaysia. She was the state financial officer before assuming her new post.

FIRST LPGA GOLFER

Lim Siew Ai started golf at the age of 6 and turned professional in 1996 at 22. She first qualified to play in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour
in 1999, when she recorded a tie for 30th at the Japan Airlines Big Apple Classic; returned to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament and tied for 51st to retain a non-exempt status for the 2002 session.
